What is a container spreader?

A container spreader is the port equipment lifting attachment fitted to a crane or reach stacker that connects directly to an intermodal container. It extends to match the container's corner castings and locks on using twistlocks — rotating pins that engage with the ISO-standard oval apertures at each corner of the container. Without a spreader, a crane hook alone cannot safely lift a container.

How do twistlocks work?

Each corner of a spreader carries a twistlock head. When the spreader is lowered onto a container, the pins drop into the corner casting apertures. The operator then rotates the pins 90° — either manually or via a hydraulic actuator — locking the spreader to the container. A set of indicator lights or sensors confirms a secure connection before the lift begins.

Types of container spreaders

  • Telescopic spreader: the most common type. The frame extends hydraulically to handle both 20 ft and 40 ft containers (and 45 ft in some models), making it highly versatile for mixed-fleet terminals.
  • Fixed spreader: a rigid frame sized for a single container length (usually 20 ft or 40 ft). Lower cost and lighter weight, suited to terminals handling one dominant container size.
  • Twin-lift spreader: can lift two 20 ft containers simultaneously, effectively doubling throughput per crane cycle. Used on high-productivity STS cranes and RTGs.
  • Tandem spreader: two spreader frames operating together under a single crane to lift two 40 ft containers at once — found only on the most automated mega-terminals.

Spreader condition and maintenance

Spreader wear concentrates on twistlock heads, guide pins, and the telescoping mechanism. Buyers of used spreaders should verify twistlock certification dates, check for cracks in the main frame, and confirm the hydraulic system holds pressure without drift.

Leading manufacturers

  • Bromma (Cargotec) — the global market leader; STS, RTG, and reach stacker spreaders.
  • Stinis — Dutch manufacturer; known for heavy-duty STS spreaders used in European mega-ports.
  • Elme Spreader — Swedish brand; strong in reach stacker and empty container handler spreaders.
