What is a terminal tractor?

A terminal tractor — essential port equipment also known as a yard tractor, shunt truck, or terminal truck — is a short, purpose-built vehicle designed to move semi-trailers and container chassis within the boundaries of a port terminal, distribution centre, or intermodal yard. Unlike an over-the-road truck, it is not licensed for public highways and is optimised purely for low-speed, high-cycle coupling and uncoupling of trailers.

How is a terminal tractor different from a road tractor?

A terminal tractor is built around a single task: connect to a trailer's kingpin as quickly as possible, move the trailer a short distance, and disconnect. Key design differences include:

  • Fifth wheel height: adjustable hydraulically so the driver can couple to trailers at varying heights without manual work.
  • Turning radius: extremely tight — terminal tractors can turn inside their own length, essential in congested terminal lanes.
  • Cab position: the cab sits far forward over the front axle, giving the driver a clear view of the coupling area and the lane ahead.
  • Speed: top speed typically 40–50 km/h — sufficient for terminal operations, far below highway requirements.

Drawbar pull and towing capacity

Terminal tractors are rated by drawbar pull, which defines the maximum trailer weight they can move on the flat. Most standard models offer:

  • 60–90 t drawbar pull for standard 20 and 40 ft container operations.
  • 100–150 t drawbar pull for heavy-duty variants used in bulk, RoRo, or heavy-lift terminals.

Electric and autonomous terminal tractors

Battery-electric terminal tractors are now commercially available from several manufacturers and are being adopted rapidly by ports seeking to meet zero-emission targets within terminal boundaries. Autonomous (self-driving) variants — often called AGVs or ATTs — are deployed at highly automated terminals such as ECT Delta (Rotterdam) and Yangshan (Shanghai).

Leading manufacturers

  • Terberg (Netherlands) — the market leader in Europe; RT and YT series; electric variants available.
  • Kalmar (Cargotec) — T2 series; often sold alongside Kalmar reach stackers and straddle carriers as part of a terminal fleet package.
  • Hyster — H series terminal tractors; well-established in North America and Asia-Pacific.
  • MAFI (Germany) — specialises in heavy-duty RoRo and multipurpose terminal tractors; high drawbar pull ratings.
  • CVS Ferrari (Italy) — widely used in Mediterranean ports; competitive pricing.
