What are container spreaders?

Container spreaders are specialized lifting frames used to safely lift, move, and position containers in ports and container terminals. They are a key component in the container handling process and are typically mounted on gantry cranes, mobile harbour cranes, or reach stackers.

Each container spreader is equipped with twistlocks that connect to the corner castings of a container. This creates a secure mechanical link between the crane and the container, without the need for manual intervention.

Most spreaders are designed for 20ft and 40ft containers, though telescopic models can automatically adjust to 45ft and other sizes. Operation can be electric, hydraulic, or pneumatic — depending on the machine and application.

From a technical standpoint, container spreaders are categorized into fixed models, semi-automatic types, and fully automated systems. Each type serves a different use case based on terminal setup, operational speed, and safety requirements.

Engineered for heavy-duty use and maximum reliability, container spreaders are an essential part of modern port equipment operations.
