Headblock: Definition & Function

A headblock is the hoisting gear that connects a crane's hoist ropes to its container spreader. It is the link between the crane and the load, so it is classed as lifting tackle rather than a load-handling device, and it is one of the defining interface components in container port equipment.

What a headblock does

Beyond simply holding the spreader, the headblock carries the functions that position the load: rotation (slewing the container), and the list, trim, and skew adjustments that level a container before it lands. It also routes the electrical and data connection between the crane and the spreader's twistlocks and sensors.

Why it matters when buying

The headblock interface is brand-specific (for example Bromma or Stinis), defined by its pin pattern and connector type. A spreader and crane only fit together if their headblock interface matches, so it is a key compatibility check on any used crane or spreader.

Headblocks and related components are listed under spreader parts on Portneeds.
