TEU (Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit): Definition

TEU stands for twenty-foot equivalent unit, the standard way to count container capacity and throughput in the shipping and port industry. One standard 20 ft container equals 1 TEU, and a 40 ft container equals 2 TEU.

How TEU is used

TEU is the common denominator that lets the industry compare different cargoes and assets on one scale. It measures the capacity of a container ship (for example a vessel of 24,000 TEU), the annual throughput of a terminal (in million TEU), and the size of a yard or storage block.

Why it matters for equipment buyers

Throughput targets in TEU drive the choice of port equipment: a high-TEU terminal needs fast ship-to-shore cranes and dense yard stacking, while a lower-volume operation can run on reach stackers. Equipment specs such as twin-lift directly raise the TEU a quay can move per hour.
